Poole, Wanda Jean
91, died peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family on Monday, October 17, 2022. Wanda was born in Hickman, Kentucky and moved
to Jackson in 1950, following her older sisters who already moved north. She married her husband of 54 years, Clifford Poole (Mick) in 1956.
Wanda met Mick while working as a waitress at The Regent Cafe. At the time, fondly, referred to as a Regent Girl. They went on to raise 3 children in a classic 1950's neighborhood. It was there her life revolved around her family and friendships that would become lifelong.
Wanda liked to say she closed several Jackson restaurants. After The Regent Cafe closed, she worked at Dragonetti's, The Brown Hut, Yukon Jack's and the Brandywine. She retired from waitressing after working briefly at Knight's Steakhouse.
Wanda loved being a waitress because she loved people. She always remembered her regular customers by their faces and the food and drinks they ordered, rarely by their names. It was common to go places with her and run into someone she knew, even out of town.
To describe Wanda, you would say she loved people, she was fun, but told it like it was. In her younger years, Wanda and Mick enjoyed travel, golf and bowling. Home cooked meals in the southern tradition were her specialty and loved ones in attendance a must. She was a natural and self taught gardener, preferring to be outdoors. As a mother she was constantly telling us "it's beautiful out, get outside". Later she would also spend many hours "swimming" at the Y and making new friends that would become very dear and important to her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mick Poole; son, Mark; and her siblings and parents. She is survived by her daughter, Michele Sears (Marty); son, Michael; daughters by different mothers, Katrine Smith and Karen Thiel; special sister in laws, Sue Lops and Sandy Keelin; nieces, nephews and friends too numerous to mention.
The family would like to especially thank Tammy RN of Careline Hospice and caregivers, Hannah and Mary.
Visitation for Wanda will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at the Desnoyer Funeral Home from 2:00 until 4:00 PM. A Celebration of Life with a Buffett will be held on Sunday, October 23 from 12:00 Noon until 4:00 PM at the Gene Davis & Sons Banquet Hall. A private family entombment will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
