Brown Vern M.
83, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Highland Alzheimer's Care Facility in Jackson, MI. He was born on May 25, 1928 in Urbana, IL to Grant G. and Rilla M. Brown. His parents and sister, Jocelyn Brown, predeceased him. Surviving are his loving wife of 61 years, M. Caroline and three children, Jeffrey Brown (Jean) of Cottage Grove, MN, Susan Watters (Gary) of Jackson, MI, and Amy Brown-Montville of Rockford, IL. He was blessed with five grandchildren, Kellie Watters of Oshkosh, WI, Michael (Meghan) Watters of Kalamazoo, MI, Steven Watters of Kalamazoo, MI, Jennifer Brown of Cottage Grove, MN, and Jonathan Montville of Rockford, IL. Two sisters, Barbara McGriff (Mark) Woodenville, WA, and Marilyn Fairfield (Leon) of Fisher, IL, also survive him. Vern proudly served his country as a member of the US Army, during the Korean War. Upon graduation from the University of Illinois in 1957, he began a 28-year career in accounting with the Consumers Power Company. Subsequently, he was affiliated with Flagstar Bank until 1989. As a retiree, Vern was proud to be Treasurer of the CP Forerunners Club, and a volunteer as Audit Supervisor for the CP Federal Credit Union. Vern was actively involved in the Kiwanis Club, serving as President of the Riverside Kiwanis Club in Saginaw, MI, then as a member of the Jackson Downtown Kiwanis Club, frequently participating in many of their community projects.He loved all types of music, especially Big Band and Jazz. Vern loved to travel, and could be packed and ready to go in minutes. Vern was a wonderful husband, father, and grandpa, and while he will be greatly missed, we will cherish the beautiful memories of him for the rest of our lives.
Visitation will be held at Desnoyer Funeral Home on Friday, September 30, 2011 from 5-8 PM.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 12:00 Noon at First United Methodist Church of Jackson, with the Rev. Ed Ross officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Highland Alzheimer's Care Facility of Jackson, or the First United Methodist Church. A special heartfelt thanks goes out to the wonderful and loving staff of Highland, for their compassionate care during Vern's last months.
