A distinguished attorney, dedicated educator, and compassionate patriarch, passed away peacefully on his 87th birthday, April 24, 2026.
Thomas Fleming, born in 1939 in Jackson, Michigan, to James "Jay" and Bernadine "Betty" Fleming, dedicated his life to justice, mentorship, and education. After graduating from St. John’s High School in 1957, he earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and his Juris Doctor from Wayne State University. Tom served as Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Jackson County and as a Special Assistant Attorney General for the State of Michigan, and later built a respected career as a criminal defense attorney in private practice. He also devoted over two decades to educating future law enforcement professionals and criminal justice students, leading the Southern Michigan Law Enforcement Training Center and serving as a Professor of Criminal Justice at Jackson College.
Tom cherished his role as husband, father and grandfather. His greatest joy was his family, seeking every opportunity for fishing, golfing and walking the local nature trails with them. He was an admired mentor, a devoted friend, and a man of many passions. He wrote poetry, fished the Great Lakes, and was a formidable card player. He made countless friends and left an indelible mark on every life he touched.
Tom was preceded in death by his deeply beloved wife, Carolyn Fleming, his devoted daughter, Colleen, and his parents, James Fleming and Bernadine (Switzer).
He is survived by his children, Thomas(Renee) Fleming and Maureen (John) Kim; his grandchildren, Eden(spouse Natalie Marble), Conner (spouse Shannon Wee), Randi (spouse Ryan O’Dowd), Dakota (spouse Bre Wilkes), Eric, and Scott; his great-grandchildren, Emma Lou, Miles, Jack, and Sonny; and his second wife, Mary Campbell.
A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at Queen of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church on Friday, May 1, 2026 at 11:30 AM with Fr. Timothy MacDonald officiating. A private interment will take place at South Jackson Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church on Friday, May 1 from 10:30 to 11:30 AM.
In lieu of flowers contributions to the Dahlem Environmental Education Center would be appreciated.
