Age 85, left for her eternal home on Easter Sunday, March 27th, 2016 in Jackson, Michigan. She was a devoted wife of 54 years to Marvin J. Piniewski, mother of four, godmother and aunt. Sophie was born April 21, 1930, in Jackson, the eldest of two daughters, to Mary and Michael Balawender. She graduated from Jackson High School and worked at Aeroquip Corporation as an executive secretary. She later was "Jackson" famous for her talent of cake decorating and cared for her own elderly mother from home.

Sophie was a member and volunteered her time, talent and treasure to St. Joseph Catholic Church where she belonged to the Rosary Society, Women's Guild and the Guardian Angel Circle. She also supported her children's interests and volunteered as a leader for Jackson County 4-H Clubs and many high school musical productions. She was an excellent seamstress and cook, avid family photographer, wrote beautiful letters and cards, and enjoyed camping, sightseeing, dancing a good polka and many treasured road trips with her family. In later years she enjoyed travel with husband Marvin, lunch with "Kostka Girls," exercising with the "50 and Better" Boos Center, sharing a good cup of coffee, playing bingo, and spending time watching her children and grandchildren grow and achieve. She loved to share her faith through the power of praying the Mass and Holy Rosary for many family and friends.

She is survived by her daughters Carol J. (Robert) Kelsall of San Diego CA, Cynthia M. Wagner and Patricia P. (Stephen) Soltis, both of Jackson, MI; and son, Thomas J. (April) Piniewski of Surprise, AZ. Sophie has 13 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Marvin J. Piniewski, sister, Irene J. Barnhouse and her granddaughter Sarah M. Wagner.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 705 N. Waterloo St. Jackson, MI 49202 on Monday, April 4th at 10:30am with Father Timothy MacDonald officiating.

Her life will be celebrated during visitation with family and friends at Desnoyer funeral home; 204 N. Blackstone St. Jackson, MI 49201 on Sunday, April 3rd from 2-4 and 6-8pm with a Rosary at 3:00 pm, and at the church on Monday from 10:00am until the time of the Mass.

Instead of flowers, donations may be made to St. John/St. Joseph Parish Community or Good Shepherd Catholic Radio.
