a long-time resident of Houghton Lake and Jackson, Michigan, passed away in peace early Wednesday morning on April 6 in Grand Blanc, Michigan. Born in 1935 in Erlanger, Kentucky, she was the beloved wife of Arthur J. Sussex, who she greatly missed and will now rejoin.

Shirley received her Bachelor degree from Sienna Heights University and her nursing degree from Mercy College, thereafter pursuing a successful medical career as a nurse anesthetist until her retirement. Shirley loved to socialize and entertain, play cards with family and friends, spend time at her home on Houghton Lake with her grandchildren, and display her lively wit in stimulating conversation.

She is survived by her children, Karen (John) Folkerth, Helen (William) Zimmerman, Joseph (Shelly) Sussex, and her grandchildren, Laura (Ryan) Taggart, Katherine (Ryan) Hoensheid, Lisa Folkerth, Sarah (Jared) Eudier, Lindsay Folkerth, Tieler Holland, Rachel Marie Sussex and Benjamin Sussex, as well as her great grandson Landen Hoensheid.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, April 11 at Queen of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church at 11:00 AM with Father Timothy MacDonald as the celebrant. Interment will take place at St. John's Catholic Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Queen of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church on Monday, April 11 from 10:00 AM until the time of the Mass at 11:00 AM.

The family suggests that, instead of sending flowers, please consider a memorial donation to Lumen Christi Catholic School.
