Bako, Sherry
Our sweet, smiling Sherry passed away peacefully during her sleep early Monday morning, May 17th, 2021 at the age of 68. Sherry was a loving daughter, sister and aunt and a friend to many.
Sherry was born February 16th, 1953 to Ernest and May Bako in Detroit, Michigan, later moving to Jackson, Michigan, where she spent her years in the loving care of her family. In the early years, you would see Sherry zooming around the house and obsessively climbing up and down the stairs. She loved playing with musical toys and banging on the piano. Sherry thoroughly enjoyed music, often clapping her hands and laughing out loud purely enjoying the moments. More than those things though was her love for her many nieces and nephews. They were the apples of her eyes and could do no wrong. It was learned at an early age that if you were going to get in trouble, go stand by Sherry because she didn't like the sound of raised voices thus causing the parents to forego expected punishments.
Sherry joined her family on the many outings throughout the years. From camping at Sandy Pines in Grand Rapids to lounging in the sun at Orange Lake in Florida, Sherry took part in it all. She made visits to her siblings in college, stood by their sides as they married, and held their precious babies in her arms grinning from ear to ear. She danced at weddings, giggled at "The Three Stooges" and "The Muppet Show," and splashed in the pool. She rode in golf carts (except for the time Denise dumped her) and in the attached trailer to the lawn mower. Sherry gave the BEST hugs often holding you tightly in her embrace and her smile lit up the whole room.
Her school years were spent at the wonderful Lyle A. Torrent Center where she thrived and excelled in having fun and playing games. Sherry was blessed with the many teachers and aides she had throughout her time there. She spent her adult years attending different programs such as ones at the Adult Day Activity Center and The Respite Center. Many caregivers graced Sherry with their devotion and assistance throughout the years….too many to name, but please know you are all deeply appreciated. Sherry's final years were spent at the Bethany House in Jackson, Michigan, where she received an abundance of care and love. We will be forever grateful to this wonderful place….especially Pam Dill and all of her staff.
So many people touched Sherry's life to whom we owe our gratitude. Special thank yous to Dr. Bruce Bigelow and Dr. Patty Hoffman whose excellent care and friendship throughout the years brought Sherry and us great comfort, and to Mrs. Diane McDonald for her neighborly friendship.
Sherry was preceded in death by her grandmother, Helen Bako, her father, Ernest Bako, and nephew, Jason Schonhard. She is survived by her mother, May Bako, and siblings, Paul (Joan) Bako, Cindy (David) Knight, Terri (Rob) McEldowney and Denise (Mark) Schonhard, 14 nieces and nephews, and 10 great-nieces and nephews with one on the way. Her laughter and smiles spoke more than words ever could.
Sherry is at the Desnoyer Funeral Home where a Prayer Service will be held on Friday, May 21 at 10:00 AM followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at Queen of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church at 10:30 AM with Father Timothy MacDonald as the Celebrant. The Mass will be live streamed on Queen of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church's Facebook Page. Interment will follow at St. John's Catholic Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 20, 2021, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM with a Rosary Service at 6:30 PM. Masks and social distancing will be required at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Bethany Care Home.
