Doroshko, Semen "Sam"
Age 96, passed away on Tuesday, May 28, 2019. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Anna; daughters, Luba Davis (Tom), Lucy (Tom Wheeker), Anna Helen Sager (David), and Irene McGlinchey (John), as well as a number of grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Sam immigrated to the U.S. by way of Germany where he had been taken from Ukraine to work as forced labor for the German Army during World War II. Leaving Ukraine meant leaving his family and plans of becoming an electrical techinician for which he had been trained. After the war, he met his future wife, Anna (Staruchina), in a displaced person's camp and was able to take his family, including his daughter Luba, to the U.S. sponsored by a church in Indiana. Sam and Anna worked on an Indiana farm for less than a year before moving to Jackson, Michigan where he worked for a short time in construction before starting his own business, Doro Window Cleaning Company. With the assistance of his wife, Sam grew his business to be the largest window cleaning/janitorial service in Jackson for a long time. The business continued for over 40 years before Sam completely retired in his 80s. In addition to enjoying family and friends, Semen loved playing chess, fishing, growing vegetables, was an avid Red Wing Hockey fan, and enjoyed soccer which he played for a short time after the war. Very gregarious, he hosted many backyard celebrations for his daughters' graduations, education being one of the many values he instilled in his children. His children continued the tradition of backyard celebrations by hosting events in honor of their parents' birthdays and anniversaries. Sam will be remembered and missed by his family and friends.
Funeral services for Sam will be held at the Desnoyer Funeral Home on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at 1:00 PM with Fr. Dusan Koprivica officiating. Interment will follow at Spring Arbor Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 12:00 to 1:00 PM.
Contributions in Sam's memory may be made to Faith Haven Senior Care Centre, 6531 W. Michigan Ave, Jackson, Michigan, 49201 would be appreciated.
