Smith, Roy N.
Of Jackson, Michigan passed away at Henry Ford Allegiance Hospice Home on Monday, June 10, 2019 from a brief, highly accelerated form of ALS. He was born on August 31, 1947 to Carl and Rose Smith in Jackson, Michigan. He is preceded in death by his parents Carl and Rose Smith, and his siblings Jerry (Joyce) Smith and David Smith. Roy is survived by his siblings Richard (Maria) Smith, Phillip (Mary) Smith, Joyce (Scott) Davis, Donna Blais, Mona Worsham, and Judy (Jeff) Griffiths. Although Roy did not have children of his own, he was a father-figure and took great pride in his 82 nieces and nephews to which he dedicated his time, wisdom, and love. Roy enjoyed being active and in addition to various physical pursuits, he spent years coaching many of his nieces and nephews in his favorite sport - basketball. He was also a mentor and role-model to many boys and girls in his years as a coach, friend, and confidant. Roy enjoyed spending time with his family, outdoors, playing board games, corn-hole "beans", cards, and billards. Roy was an avid reader who took a great interest in literature. He spent his life amassing a library of his own an his love of literature trickled down to the nieces and nephews he so loved. Roy served in the military during the Vietnam Era and had high respect for all veterans surviving and deceased.
Cremation has been chosen and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at 10:30 AM at St John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 711 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive with Fr. Robert Pienta officiating followed by remembrance at the Parish Hall.
