Robert David Sherwin was born November 14, 1934 in Ferndale, Michigan to Harry Wesley Sherwin and Dora M. Sherwin (Long). He passed away at Henry Ford Hospital in Jackson at the age of 92 on July 1st, 2026.
He graduated from Lincoln High School in Ferndale in 1952. After he graduated, he attended Big Beaver's Flying School between 1955 to 1957 then he enlisted into the Navy from 1956 to 1958. While in the Navy he served as a Chief Petty Officer. He later obtained the "Royal Order of the Blue Nose" also known as the "Blue Nose Society" which is a maritime tradition bestowed on sailors who cross the Arctic Circle. Robert married H. Ann Russell on March 1st, 1957 while still serving in the Navy.
After his service in the Navy, he went on to become a Mechanical Engineer upon graduating from Michigan Tech College on December 12, 1961. After graduation he moved to Jackson, Michigan in 1962 where he worked for Consumers Power (now Consumers Energy) then moved to Monroe, Michigan in 1963 working for Consumers Power. He then moved in 1965 to Bay City working for Consumers Power, and finally Robert moved back to Jackson Michigan where he stayed until he retired in 1990. He finished his career as a Special Project Manager converting the Midland plant (also known as the Midland Cogeneration Venture or MCV) from nuclear power to gas-fire and has been fully operational, while providing power for decades since. He also worked on small projects fixing hydro-dams where he was able to enjoy fly fishing, and had become part of the Anglers of the AuSable.
Robert was a part owner of the Grass Lake Sailing club and was Regional Commodore for United States Power Squadron where he taught boating safety and piloting. Robert often won 1st place in the sailing club. Also in the mid 70's, Robert and his son (Bob Sherwin) competed in two national tournaments for the Mutineer Class at Stoney Creek Metro Park near Rochester, Michigan. Robert and his son took third place and second place in the years they competed.
In Robert's retirement he loved sailing, fishing, trains, football, golf and most importantly spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his wife H. Ann Sherwin; his sister Judy (Riem) Sherwin; his mother Dora Sherwin; and his father Harry Sherwin. He is survived by his two sons David Sherwin and Robert "Bob" Sherwin (Leanne); his grandson Paul Sherwin; his granddaughter Rachel Owens (Michael); great-granddaughters Sophia Owens, Eleanor Owens, Coraline Owens and his great-grandson Oliver Owens.
Funeral services will be held at the Desnoyer Funeral Home on Thursday, July 9, 2026 at 11:00 AM with Father Timothy MacDonald officiating. He will then be interred at the Mount Avon Cemetery in Rochester at 2:30 PM.
The family will receive friends prior to the funeral from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM on Thursday.
