passed away peacefully Friday, August 10, 2018 at age 88. He was preceded in death by his son Timothy, parents Richard E. and Edith, in-laws Victor and Pharailde Maes, Philip and Margaret O'Neil, Phillip and Juliet O'Connell, and nephew Timothy O'Connell.

Richard is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Madeline; sister, Janet of Venice, Florida; children Thomas (Janice), Gary (Delayn), Richard, Denise (Greg), James (Lisa), Michael (Susan), Patrick (Sandra), and Michelle (Scott Shirk); twenty two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, seven nieces and nephews and their families.

As a lifelong Jackson resident, Richard graduated from Jackson High School where he was a proud member of the 1948 State Championship basketball team. He attended Jackson Community College and graduated from Michigan State University with a Mechanical Engineering degree. After completing his studies, he served in the Army in post-war Germany. Richard was a brilliant engineer, an entrepreneur, inventor, and patent holder.

Richard was a dedicated father and grandfather who thoroughly enjoyed coaching and traveling wherever necessary to attend athletic events and performances. He was a proud supporter of his community serving as a member of the Jackson Public School Board, president of the Jackson Area Catholic School Board, and Knights of Columbus of Queen's Parish. As an avid fan and supporter of Lumen Christi, Richard was an active Titan Club member and spent many evenings filming Titan football. He enjoyed the comradery of friends, time with family, camping and the outdoors, cribbage and crossword puzzles, and was a splendid storyteller with an insatiable curiosity.

The family would like to thank the staff at Summit Park Assisted Living for the care and compassion shown to Richard during his time with them.

The family will receive friends at Queen of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church on Tuesday, August 14 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 Noon followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 Noon. Father Timothy MacDonald will be the Celebrant at the Mass. Interment will take place at St. John's Catholic Cemetery after the Mass.

Instead of flowers the family suggests that you please consider making a memorial donation in Richard's memory to the Jackson Interfaith Shelter, 414 S Blackstone St, Jackson, MI 49201, or Lumen Christi Catholic School, 3483 Spring Arbor Rd., Jackson, MI 49203.
