He is also survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
During high school at St. Mary's, he was known for being able to make a basket from the center of the court, earning him the nickname, Dead Eye Dick. After graduating, Richard enlisted in the Army Air Corp during World War II and attended Butler University (We are the Butler Bulldogs!). When he came home, he graduated from Jackson Business University. He then worked for Clark Equipment until he spearheaded the start the Clark Equipment Federal Credit Union. Richard worked for 37 years as office manager together with many wonderful staff members. He also helped start the Jackson Catholic Credit union and served as President of the Jackson Chapter of Credit Unions, and on the Board of directors for the Michigan Credit Union League. Richard worked to raise funds for the building of the original Our Lady of Fatima Church and later the school. He was an active member of the Parish Council and school board. Back in the 1960's he helped start a Friday night roller skating event in the school gym for area children that lasted for many years. Richard was a member of the Michigan Center Lions Club and the Michigan Center Rotary Club. Because he always and forever loved to dance, he was the President of the Dance Club for many years after WWII.
After his retirement from Clark Credit Union, he worked for Hospice of Jackson as an accountant. He later became a volunteer for Hospice of Jackson, then after moving to Dunedin, Florida, he volunteered for Florida Suncoast Hospice and the Tampa Bay American Cancer Society. He also drove Cancer Patients to treatment through the Road to Recovery Program. In Florida, he served as president of the Westwind Mobile Home Park Social Club.
Richard was always the life of any party he attended. He loved playing cards with his brothers and sisters, and was well known for his big heart, and always always being there to help when help was needed. Sadly, missed by his family and everyone who knew him. Richard's family would like to send special thank you's to Arbor North, Highland Memory Care, and Southern Care Hospice for taking such good care of our dad and being so kind and thoughtful as we transitioned through this time of his life.
The Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, November 6 at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church with Father Satheesh Alphonse SdC as the Celebrant. The family will receive friends at the Church, before the Mass, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, Richard's family suggests donating to the Hanover Horton Area Historical Society.
