The Reverend Paul Julian Cummings, age 94, a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Lansing, died on Monday, May 4, 2020. Fr. Cummings was born on March 29, 1926 in Jackson, Michigan to the lateMatthew and Rose (Hahn) Cummings. He was graduated from St. John's High School Class of 1944. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy and served during World War II. Fr. Cummings completed his seminary studies at St. John's Provincial Seminary and was ordained on June 4, 1955 by Bishop Joseph H. Albers at St. Mary Cathedral in Lansing, Michigan.
Fr. Cummings pastoral assignments as Parochial Vicar included St. Roberts, Flushing, St. Joseph, Battle Creek, St. Augustine, Kalamazoo, St. Therese, Lansing, St. Mary, Mt. Morris, St. John, Davison, also, serving as Pastor at St. Isidore, Laingsburg, Holy Family, Ovid, Immaculate Heart of Mary, Lansing, St. Peter, Eaton Rapids, Holy Spirit, Hamburg, Following "retirement" in 1996, Fr. Paul continued to serve in several churches wherever he resided, helping with the Liturgy wherever needed.
Fr. Cummings is survived by four siblings, Bernard, of Lombard, IL, Leo (Glenda) of Jackson, Sr. Kathleen Cummings, OLV, of Huntington, IN, Richard (Mary Ann) of Jackson; sister-in-law, Sophia Cummings. Along with his parents Fr. Cummings was preceded in death by seven siblings, Thomas (Jean), Rosemary (Vernon) Kite, Rita (Robert) Frybarger, Francis, James (Catharine), Teresa (Ralph) Hansel, Matthew (Janet).
A public visitation will be held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church located at 771 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, in Jackson, Michigan on Thursday, May 7, 2020 from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Thank you in advance to those who attend to observe social distancing while at the visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with The Most Reverend Earl Boyea officiating, and Fr. James Shaver will give the homily.
Due to the COVID 19 pandemic the mass will be private. The Funeral Mass will be Live Streamed at www.saintjohnjackson.org on Friday, May 8, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. and later posted to YouTube for those not able to view on Friday.
