Videto (Wernet), Phyllis Jean
Phyllis struggled for several years with a variety of health issues, facing them with grace and courage. She passed away peacefully on November 1, 2020 at age 87, attended by her loving family. Born in Jackson on Aug. 1, 1933, Phyllis was the youngest child of John B. and Mary Wernet. She was a 1951 graduate of St. Mary High School, where she made many lifelong friends and especially enjoyed singing in the choir. While still in high school she met the love of her life, Melvin Videto. They celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary this year.
Phyllis was devoted to her family, friends and church. A longtime member of Queen's Parish, she was active in church groups as well as a number of local service organizations, and was a big supporter of Lumen Christi High School. Attending concerts and listening to music were favorite pastimes--she always loved a Sousa march. She and Mel enjoyed traveling and shared many adventures over the years, including time spent in their winter Florida community. She loved flowers of all kinds, enjoyed a good bowl of mint chocolate chip ice cream, and couldn't be beaten in a game of croquet. Phyllis' primary focus was her family, and she treasured the life she and Mel shared in Jackson surrounded by their parents, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, children and grandchildren. Some of them preceded her in death, including her parents John and Mary, sister Margaret (Gene) Reidel, brother Bernard (Betty) Wernet, brother Robert (Pat) Wernet, and others who were special to her.
Those who remain to mourn her loss and celebrate her memory are her husband Melvin and their children--Cindy (Joseph) Samson, Carol (James) Grund, Stephen (Lori) Videto, Brian (Donna) Videto, and Catherine (Allan) Padbury. Her beloved grandchildren are Johanna (Luke) Grof, Kristina Samson, Matthew (Lauren) Grund, Paul Grund, David (MaryAnn) Grund, Katelyn Videto, Justin Videto, Dylan Videto, Melanie Videto, Ana Videto, William Padbury and Nathan Padbury. Phyllis was thrilled to become a great-grandmother when Liliana Matsuo Grund was born in March. She will also be greatly missed by her devoted sister Patricia (Frank) McCollum, and by many other friends and family members.
The family has celebrated a private Mass of Christian Burial, and will host a memorial service at a later date. If you wish to remember Phyllis with a charitable gift, please make a donation to the charity of your choice. And when you think of Phyllis, think of her favorite psalm and the loving, positive way she lived her life: "This is the day the Lord has made; let us be glad and rejoice in it."
