Farrand, Philip D.
Phil passed away on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at the age of 85. He was born to Edna and Edward Farrand on July 3, 1924. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Phyllis, and four children; Eileen, Sue, Nancy and David; and six grandchildren. Phil has been cremated and there will be no visitation. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 14 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church at 11:00 AM. Reverend James Shaver will be the celebrant. Phil served 3 years in World War II in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. O'Neill, a destroyer escort. He crossed the Atlantic Ocean 10 times at (15 miles per hour) to ports such as Casablanca, Bizerte and Londonderry. He transited the Panama Canal twice and the Pacific Ocean twice. His first of 3 battle stars was at Luzon Philippines. They were then on picket duty at Okinawa from April 1, 1945 (D-Day) to May 25. While they were at Okinawa, 4 bombs were dropped astern. On May 25, the O'Neill was hit by a suicide plane. There were 2 killed and 20 injured. The O'Neill returned to Long Beach, California for repairs. While there, the war ended and Phil was eventually discharged.
Phil graduated from Michigan State College and on April 22, 1951, he and Phyllis Crowley were married. He practiced accounting for many years.
