Age 92, passed on peacefully in his sleep Monday, April 1, 2019, joining his wife Rosemary (Murphy) Gies in everlasting love.
He is survived by his four children, Jane (Jim) Rasmussen, Paul (Sue) Gies Jr., Patricia (Paul) Mulcahy, and Edward Gies; his nine grandchildren; and his five great grandchildren. Paul enjoyed talking about every one of them as they each made him proud and happy in their own individual way.
Throughout his life Paul traveled for work and pleasure including throughout the U.S, the Pacific, the British Isles, Japan, Europe, and the Atlantic. No matter where he was, he enjoyed "good music", classical music. He supported performances of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony, the Seattle Symphony, and the Jackson Symphony Orchestras, not to mention those he and Rosemary attended in Europe.
Paul had fun racing his sailboat at the Clark Lake Yacht Club, golfing at the Arbor Hills Country Club, playing couples bridge with Rosemary, and eating at the Jackson Airport Restaurant to see all the different planes take off and land.
Paul was active at the Queen of the Miraculous Medal Parish ushering, helping with funerals, and fulfilling adoration responsibilities.
Paul was born as the baby of eight children to Joseph John Gies and Mary Florence (Drennan) Gies on January 27, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan. There Paul attended St. Gabriel School and Holy Redeemer High School where he met Rosemary to become his wife after college. He attended the University of Detroit with a scholarship via the Knights of Equity and his grandfather Jeremiah Drennan of Wyandotte, Michigan. He graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, as a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
Paul received his honorary discharge from the Navy on September 24, 1946, after WW II and then from the Air Force on October 19, 1960.
Paul was intelligent and thrived on a challenge – especially something that had not been figured out before. He was the inventor of several patents while working at Houdaille Industries in Buffalo NY, Eaton Corporation Hydraulics in Eden Prairie MN, and Vickers, Tompkins-Johnson, Aeroquip, Eaton Corporation in Jackson Michigan. When he retired, he stayed active in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and invested in companies, tracking their strategies, products, and financial results.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2019 Queen of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church at 1:00 PM with Fr. Timothy MacDonald officiating. A private interment will be held at St. John's Catholic Cemetery.
