Lapinski (Backus), Nancy Knight

Died peacefully on April 23, 2014 at home surrounded by her family. Nancy was born in Toledo, Ohio on March 24, 1933 to Virginia (Netz) and Arthur Backus. She lived in various places in Ohio before settling in Jackson with her family in the early 1940's. Professionally Nancy worked at Jacobson's as a buyer for many years and as CFO for MBTM Ltd. For much of her life she was a proud full-time mother and a role model as a passionate conservationist and steward of many natural places. One such place, the Kate Palmer Audubon Sanctuary (Bird Haven as Nancy called it), was the Audubon Sanctuary she spent countless hours by herself or with friends and family picking up trash or removing invasive species.
Nancy's passion for conservation was woven deeply into a number of local organizations. She was the co-founder of Recycling Jackson (www.recyclingjackson.com), the Grand River Environmental Action Team (GREAT – www.great-mi.org) and a life member of Jackson Audubon Society (www.jacksonaudubon.org) along with being a proud supporter of over 20 community and national organizations during the course of her life. As a committed member of the Jackson community, Nancy served on the Jackson zoning and planning commissions and the Ells Sharp Park Board. She was an avid outdoorswoman who bird-watched, hiked and camped for much of her life; traveling all over the world to see birds and natural places.

Nancy was very devoted to her family and friends including her husband of 45 years Jack, two daughters and their families: Maria Lapinski-LaFaive and her husband Andrew LaFaive; Natasha and Matthew Koss, three grandchildren: Adrien, Quinn, and Elsa; brother, Peter Van Norden Backus; life-long friend Louise Hefka, and special friend Beth Rottler. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Phillip. The family would like to acknowledge the care and support of Great Lakes Caring Home Hospice.

According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial celebration at Cascades Manor House in Jackson on Friday, May 30, 2014 from 4:00-8:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, please send a memorial donation to one of the above listed organizations or the environmental or animal welfare organization of your choice.
