Age 77, passed away on March 16, 2026, in Montana, while being deeply cared for by his daughters. Born August 6, 1948, in Rock Island, Illinois, to Elene “Joy” and James Leo Hughes II, he was one of fifteen children in a large and close-knit Irish family, where a deep sense of loyalty and connection to one another was instilled early and carried throughout his life.
Michael proudly served his country in the 82nd and 173rd Airborne Divisions, carrying that quiet strength and resilience with him throughout his life. He went on to become a beloved chiropractor, caring deeply for his patients and forming lasting relationships built on trust and compassion.
On June 30, 1973, he married the love of his life, Deborah Jean Hughes. Their marriage spanned more than five decades until her passing on April 22, 2025.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Debbie, his parents, and his siblings Rita DeRue, Richard Hughes, and Hattie Hughes.
Michael is survived by his daughters Natalie Hughes and Melinda Turner, his son-in-law Nick Turner, and his cherished grandchildren Bodhi and Wren. He is also survived by his siblings Connie Rowland, James (“Buddy”) Hughes, Christine Moore, Patrice Young, Kevin Hughes, Nora Naab, Mary West, Kathleen McGinnis, Zachary Hughes, Frank Hughes, and Kelley Eitenmiller, along with MANY nieces, nephews, and extended family.
He will be remembered for his strength, his loyalty, and the deep love he carried for his family.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday March 28, 2026 at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Jackson. Fr. Tim Nelson will officiate at the Funeral Mass.
The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday, March 28, 2026 from 9:00 to 10:00 AM.
Instead of sending flowers, contributions to St. Mary’s Church would be appreciated.
