Hanson, Melvin Clement
age 76, passed away at Bronson Hospital in Battle Creek on Friday, April 2, 2021. Mel was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 23, 1944 to Melvin H. and Stella (Tautkus) Hanson. The family moved to Crookston, Minnesota two years later and Mel graduated from high school in 1962. He then moved to Albion, Michigan to live with his brother Leroy Fazio and family. Mel married Mary Ellen Sullivan on August 22, 1964 and they enjoyed almost 57 years of marriage. Mel is survived by his wife Mary Ellen, daughter Catherine (Tom) Keller, son Timothy Hanson, granddaughters Courtney Hanson and Karyn Keller, grandson Troy Keller, step-granddaughter Samantha (Cody) McClinchey, brother Ron (Sue) Hanson, sister-in-law Elizabeth Fazio, several step-great-grandchildren, niece Heather Hanson, great-nephew Justin Fazio and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Leroy Fazio and Dr. Richard Hanson, niece Linda Fazio and step-grandson James Keller.
Mel retired from Consumers Power Company in 1991. He and Mary Ellen are members of St John's Catholic Church, Consumers Jacksonians and Clarklake Beach and Boat Club. Mel's favorite pastime was watching the Tigers, Red Wings, Pistons and Lions, with always being optimistic about winning the lottery a close second. Despite many health problems for over 30 years, Mel was courageous and had a positive attitude and a fierce will to live. He will be tremendously missed.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St John the Evangelist Catholic Church at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 7, with Fr. James Shaver officiating. The Funeral Mass will be live streamed on St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church's Facebook Page. The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 AM until the time of the Mass. Interment will take place at St John's Catholic Cemetery. Donations to St John's Catholic Church would be appreciated.
