Herda-Sprawka, Mary L.

Of Gregory, formerly of Jackson, Michigan, passed away under the loving care of her family and Palliative Care at U of M Hospital on Thursday, August 31, 2023 at the age of 72 years.  She is survived by her husband, Charlie; son, Jason (Debbie) Sprawka; grandchildren, Reid and Morgan; siblings, Kathleen McKernan, Margaret Couling, and Mike (Lisa) Herda; brother-in-law, Gregory (Cheryl) Sprawka; sister-in-law, Bernadette (Jerry) Kerpet; and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Margaret Herda and father and mother-in-law, John and Florence Sprawka.

Mary graduated from Lumen Christi High School in 1969 and Oakland University where she earned her degree in Elementary Education.  She then attended Jackson Community College where she earned her Registered Nursing Degree.  Mary went on to graduate from the University of Michigan with a Masters Degree in Psychiatric Nursing.   She was employed at Chelsea Community Hospital for 10 years and then taught nursing at Kellogg Community College for 22 years.  Mary loved every moment of her jobs.

She loved knowledge and was an avid reader.  Mary enjoyed traveling (especially cruising), slot machines, loved lake life, family, and friends.

According to her wishes, cremation has taken place.  The family will receive friends at the Desnoyer Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM.  There will be a Nightingale Tribute in Mary's memory by the Nurse Honor Guard of Calhoun County at 6:00 PM.
