Carey, Mary

Of Jackson, passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2023 at the age of 81 years.  She is survived by her children, Christopher Carey (Maria Lee-Reed) and Jonathan (Lisa) Carey; grandchildren, Chase (Stacy) Carey, Brittany (Brett) Dickson, Duncan Carey (Angie Royster), Renee Carey (Eric Fraser), Phelan Carey, and Jaeger Johnson; great-grandchildren: Brady, Bennett and Keira Dickson; Blake and Conrad Carey; and Nola Carey; brother, Phil (Janet) Grillo; brother-in-law Troy Brazell; and dear friend, Margaret York-Ickes.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Salvatore and June Grillo; sister, Diane Brazell; and granddaughter, Elizabeth Carey.

Mary graduated from Marygrove College in Detroit, where she obtained a degree in Bachelor of Social Work and a Masters of Pastoral Ministry.  She was a member of American Association of University Women (AAUW). Mary was a Commissioned Lay Minister in the Diocese of Lansing and also a Volunteer Chaplain.   Mary did social work activity including positions at Families First and worked at Chrysler Proving Grounds in Chelsea for 13 years.  She started playing piano at the age of 3 and gave private piano lessons to many talented students.  Mary played Piano and Organ for many Churches, services and occasions throughout the years and was a past member of the choir at Queen of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church.

Mary had a tireless devotion to service advocating for women and children's concerns locally and also world travels to be part of efforts to raise awareness of the treatment of women and children globally.  Her passion and interest in liturgical dance led to Pastoral Ministers and youth groups reaching out to her and ask her to choreograph dance numbers for special services.

As a member of many organizations, Mary always had something interesting to add to the conversation and was very curious and wanted to learn more. She was a Joyful Spirit who enjoyed engaging with people, had a disarming way about her that encouraged open conversation, and she never met a stranger.

The family wishes to thank the many health and care workers at Henry Ford Health Systems, Allegra Nursing and Rehab, ProMedica/Heartland Home Care and Summit Park Assisted Living for their extraordinary care and compassion.

According to her wishes, cremation has taken place.  The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023 at 11:30 AM at Queen of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church with Father Timothy MacDonald officiating.

The family will receive friends at the Church on Friday, December 1 from 10:30 to 11:30 am.

Instead of flowers, contributions to the Lingap Children's Foundation, P.O. Box 1553, Jackson, MI 49204; Queen of Miraculous Medal Catholic Church, 606 S. Wisner St, Jackson, MI 49203; or the Residents in Action LLC, 915 Orchard Place, Jackson, MI 49203 would be appreciated.
