Leland L. "Lee" Smith of Jackson went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, September 3, 2015 at the age of 80 years.
Leland was born on May 17th, 1935 to Leland A. and Esther Smith in Billings, Montana. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Dianne; his brother, Michael; six children, Michael (Janet) Smith, Kenneth Smith, Paula Tronson, Keri Smith, Tracy (Hank) Williams, Leland (Ann Marie) Smith; 19 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; his brothers, Robert, Gene, Gerald, and Sherman.
Leland served in the United States Marine Corps from 1953-1956 and later attended Eastern Montana College where he earned his degree in secondary special education. He was an admired and respected special education teacher for 24 years before retiring in 2000. He had a passion for working with youth outside of the classroom by serving as a wrestling, track, basketball, weight-training and football coach in Riverton and Rawlins Wyoming, and then later in Brighton, Hartland and Jackson Michigan. He invested in the lives of young men by teaching and demonstrating the value of working hard, doing things the right way, always being thankful, loving others and sharing his faith in Jesus Christ. His family and those who knew him have been greatly blessed by his love, faithfulness, loyalty, wisdom, dedication and generosity.
Leland is now with his Lord in Heaven, but his earthly body is finally at rest at Desnoyer Funeral Home in Jackson. Funeral services will be held at Michigan Center Bible Church at 150 Broad Street in Michigan Center on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at 10:30 am with Pastor John Tovey officiating. The family will receive friends at Michigan Center Bible Church from 9:30 – 10:30 am prior to the funeral service. A private Interment will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan.
