Dake, LaVerne E. "Bud"
of Spring Arbor, Michigan passed away on Monday, January 18, 2021 at Henry Ford Allegiance in Jackson after a few days of hospitalization at the age of 88 years. "Bud" as he was called by friends and family was born July 10. 1932 in Jackson, Michigan to Vern and Genevieve Dake. His three children grew up listening to the stories of his childhood pranks and adventures with his two brothers, Bruce and Jim. Bud was proud of the time he served with the United States Marine Corp Reserves. He was honored to receive the acclaimed "sharp shooter" award, learning his marksmanship from his beloved "Granny Mac" when he as only four. He would practice shooting pheasants as they strolled from the cornfield of the back of their home. Bud married his high school sweetheart, Patricia L. Horsley, on July 19, 1951. They divorced after 41 years of marriage. He then met his dear Rosann Trahey, his life partner for over 25 years. They were able to travel extensively together, enjoying gambling at casinos, practicing their golf swings, and partaking in dining out. Rosann lovingly cared for him during their many years together. Bud was also one of the successful business owners of Wine Cellar, a party store at the Paka Plaza in Jackson. He enjoyed bantering with the customers and creating displays he would create and build in his workshop. He was a skilled craftsman and cabinet maker.
In addition, his "real job" was at Crankshaft Machine Company of Jackson. After serving his apprenticeship in high school, Bud was offered a position as a draftsman and machine designer. He was skilled at working with customers of the company and enjoyed traveling to do so. He retired after 41 years. Bud was an avid hunter and fisherman. "God does not subtract from a man's life, the time he spends fishing," he would always say.
Bud leaves behind his loving life partner, Rosann Trahey of DeWitt; three children, Steven (Peg) Dake of Jackson, MI, Christina (Randy) Bronkema of Climax, Michigan, and Laurie Lynn Taylor of Ormond Beach, Florida; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Vern and Genevieve and his three brothers, Bruce, James, and Phillip.
A military service is planned at Ft. Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek, Michigan at a later date.
Semper Fi, dear Daddy.
