Walters, Karen A.
of Jackson, passed away on Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at the RidgeCrest Health Campus. She was born on December 19, 1933 to Joseph C. and E. Ruth (Reece) Brown. She was a 1951 graduate of St. John Catholic High School. On April 27, 1957 she married James M. Walters who preceded her in death on November 3, 2001. She was a lifelong member of St. John Catholic Church where she was a willing volunteer and a member of the choir for over 35 years. She was also a former member of Jackson Choral and was a member of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. Karen was president and active in the Longfellow School P.T.A. as well as the Jackson City P.T.A. Council. She also was a former Girl Scout Leader. She retired from Sears, Roebuck & Co. as office manager of the Custom Decorating Studio. She loved music, all kinds of books, especially mysteries and poetry and always looked forward to lunch with the "Girls" and special friends. She always loved a new pair of shoes and just about anything chocolate.
She is survived by her daughters, Beth Ann Layher and husband Pete of Jackson and Amy M. Walters of Ypsilanti; grandson, Jacob Layher of Dearborn and granddaughter, Aimee Bertone of Arkansas. Also surviving are her nieces and nephews, Roxi (Kenneth) Burkey-Shallies of Jackson, Pam (James) Day of South Carolina, Dana Burkey, Lori Burkey, Mara VanGorder of Jackson, Chris (Terry) Burkey of Jackson, Eric Burkey of California and Sara VanGorder of Jackson, Christine (Steven) Sauceda of Virginia, and Cassie Colvin of California; and great-great niece Erin Sauceda of South Carolina; cousins, Molly (John) Best and family and James Brown of Jackson, Clifford (Sue) Brown of Michigan and Mike Brown of Michigan; her "other daughter" Molly Spitler and her family of Jackson.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Michael J. Walters; parents; sister, Prudy Stark; grandson, C.J. Layher; brother-in-law and sister-in-law J.C. and Rosemary (Judy) Burkey.
Mrs. Walters is at the Desnoyer Funeral Home where a prayer service will be held on Monday, October 28, 2019 at 10:00 AM followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church at 10:30 AM with Fr. James Shaver officiating. Interment will follow at St. John's Catholic Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, October 27 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and from 6:00 to 8:00 PM with a Rosary Service at 6:00 PM.
Those who wishes to make donations to St. John Catholic Church, Henry Ford Allegiance Hospice, Right To Life, or Jackson Interfaith Shelter would be greatly appreciated.
