Joseph M. Rooney

Joseph Rooney, age 88, passed away peacefully with his family by his side and under the caring staff of Legacy Assisted Living (the Legends), and SouthernCare Hospice on Wednesday, June 21, 2017

Joe was a veteran of the United States Army. He worked at Clark Equipment and retired after 32 years of service and worked several years as a custodian for St. John School. Joe was a Michigan Media Hall of Fame Member, an original member of the Jackson Five University of Michigan Football Group, working in the press box for nearly 63 years. He was a football and basketball coach for the Jackson Recreation Department and St. John School. Joe played football for the Jackson All Stars, and was a member of Lumen Christi Titan Club. Joe loved going to all of his grandchildren's sporting events and was very proud of all his grandchildren.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Olga, his first wife Geraldine, an infant daughter Ann Margaret, his twin brother Bill, brother John Rooney and stepson Dennis Demory. He is survived by his wife Mary, his children Susan (Jim) Schulz, Ann (Manuel) Lopez, Mary Rooney Patire, Pat (Susie) Rooney, Jane (Mark) Lannen, Beth (Bill) Gross, Laura (Cal) Torres and Theresa (Darin) Aldridge, 14 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, his sister Rosemary Mierzwa, his sister-in-law Kathleen Sedore, several nieces and nephews, and his longtime friend Rabbit Rider.

A visitation will be held on Sunday June 25, 2017 from 3:00pm - 7:00pm at the Desnoyer Funeral Home. The rosary will be recited at 5:00pm.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, June 30, 2017 at 1:00pm at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.

Donations may be made to the Lumen Christi Athletic Department in his memory.
