McCarthy, Joseph F.

Passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 15th, 2022 early in the morning. Joe was born September 11, 1923 in Keokuk, Iowa. He graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in engineering. It was at Iowa State that he met Mary Patricia O'Leary and they married in Manson, Iowa on September 21, 1946. She preceded him in death in 2011. Joe is survived by his six children Michael (Andrea) of Fort Gratiot, MI, Daniel of Jackson, David (Lydia) of Grand Rapids, Mary (Kim Cook) of Chicago, James of Jonesville, and Jane of Madison, WI, 12 grandchildren: Andrew, Joseph, and Christine Taylor, children of Mary, Maura, Samuel, Kathleen, and Bridget, children of Michael, Joseph, James, Teresa, and Matthew, children of David, and Nicholas, child of Jane. Joe is also survived by 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents James Thomas and Sarah Grace McCarthy and his brother James and sister Patricia.

Joe was a faithful parishioner at Queen of the Miraculous Medal Parish in Jackson where he served as an usher for many years. Joe was a lifelong baseball fan, having attended a Lansing Lugnuts game on the occasion of his 98th birthday. He also attended the first major league all star game in Chicago in 1933. Joe was a hard working man who loved his family and his faith. One of his favorite hobbies was restoring vintage cars, including a 1930 Model A. He was a loyal friend and wonderful father and a Veteran of WWII.

There will be visitation at the Desnoyer Funeral Home on Monday, December 19th from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm with a Rosary at 7:30 pm.

The Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Queen of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church at 10:30 am on Tuesday December 20th with visitation one half hour before. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy MacDonald. Private interment will be held at St. John Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Queen's or St. Francis Retreat Center in DeWitt, MI.

Joe was a quiet, compassionate man. His actions spoke far louder than his words. His faith guided everything he did. He will be greatly missed. "Besides restful waters He leads me; He refreshes my soul" Psalm 23.
