McAlary, Joseph Alexander "Joe"

Of Jackson, passed away on Friday, July 26, 2019 at the age of 85 years. Survived by his wife, Karen; one son, James McAlary; step-daughter, Sharon Roman; two step-sons, Mark (Cindy) Roman and Martin Roman; four grandchildren, Alex, Josh, and Grace McAlary and Victoria Roman; great-grandchildren, Willow and Logan; sisters, Carolynne Donovan and Mary McAlary; brothers, Phil (Holly) McAlary and Bill McAlary; and five nieces and two nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Adelia McAlary and brother-in-law, Lawrence Donovan.

Joe was born in Ionia, Michigan in 1933. He graduated from Ionia High School in 1951. He served in the United States Navy on the USS Munsee from 1951 to 1954. After serving, he graduated from Central Michigan University. Joe retired from the Michigan Department of Corrections in 1992, after working 32 years.

According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church at 10:00 AM on Friday, August 2, 2019 with Reverend Father Richard Eberle, O.S.F.S. officiating.

The family will receive friends at the Desnoyer Funeral Home on Thursday, August 1 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM and at the Church on Friday from 9:30 to 10:00 AM.
