John F. “Pete” Powers passed away on June 29, 2026 at Glacier Hills Senior Living Community in Ann Arbor. John Francis Powers better known as Pete was born October 9, 1948 to James and Ruth Powers in Jackson, Michigan. He was an amazing husband, dad, grandpa, brother and friend.
He is survived by his sons Marty (Bridget) and Dan (Erica); grandchildren: Noah, Kaspar, Shea, Padraig, and Connor; sisters in law: Katie Powers, Louie Hipskind, Jan Hipskind, Sarah (John) Shank, and Martha (Scott) Pennell; brothers in law: Bob (Mary) Hipskind and Steve Hipskind; several aunts and uncles, cousins, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends including special friends: Mike and Mary Ellen Ramker, Jerry and Cathy Sykes, Sean Spitler, Boomer Bryson, the rest of the poker guys, and Joyce Cole. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Mary of 44 years; his youngest child, Patrick; his parents, James and Ruth; brothers: Bob, Kevin, Jim, and Denis, sisters: Denise Heatherwick and Martha Powers; brothers in law: Dennis and Pat Hipskind; sisters in law; Anne Hipskind and Julie Helka and Martha Powers.
Pete was an All-American football player. He won the state championship at St. John’s School in 1965 and went onto play college football for the University of Dayton. After college he moved back to Jackson and started teaching and coaching at Lumen Christi High School. He later went on to teach and coach at Vandercook Lake High School winning the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year award in 1996. He loved to watch the Tigers, Lions, and go fishing. A special thank you for the nurses and aides at Glacier Hills Senior Living Community who have lovingly cared for Pete/Coach for the past few years.
Cremation has been chosen. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church on Wednesday, July 8, 2026 at 11:00 AM with Father Randy Koenigsknecht officiating.
The family will receive friends at the Desnoyer Funeral Home on Tuesday July 7, 2026 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM and at St. John Church on Wednesday from 10:30 to 11:00 AM.
Instead of flowers contributions to the Jackson Interfaith Shelter would be appreciated.
