Age 65 of Jackson, MI, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Jack was born to James and Grace VanSumeren on August 3, 1960, in Jackson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Grace; brothers, Tom and Jim; and sister, Terry. Jack is survived by his daughters, Kelsey Dwyer-VanSumeren and Lindsay VanSumeren; brother, Ron (Marian) VanSumeren; sisters, Anne Gray, Jeanne (Gordy) Hatt, Diane Bingman, Kathy (Dave) Gardner, and Amy (Randy) VanWagoner; aunt, Penny Schmidt; several nieces and nephews; his dog, Gracie; and close friend, Mike Schonard.
Jack was truly a "jack of all trades." He served as a dedicated employee of Jacobson's, FedEx, A.G. Edwards & Sons, and the Michigan Department of Corrections. He was also a talented general contractor who enjoyed building his own homes and helping a friend or family member with any home project. Jack was a wonderful father and a friend to all, frequently stopping to chat with a familiar face in any store he entered. He ensured that every day he was alive, he made at least one person smile. Jack enjoyed music, sitting by a campfire, shooting pool, and spending time with his family in the fall, participating in the VanSumeren family golf tournament, where he reigned as "champ" in 1994, 2011, 2016, 2017, and 2021.
According to his wishes cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends, family, and all who cared for Jack on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at Bone Island Grille's event hall (4614 Francis St.) from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
