James Reasoner, beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend and educator passed away on August 13, 2026 at the age of 85 surrounded by his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Aileen (Matthews) Reasoner and 4 children, Mark (Maureen) Reasoner, Cheryl (Mike) O’Neill, Sandra (Pat) Haynes and Stephen (Aimee) Reasoner. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren: Riley Callan, Brandon O’Neill, Sarah, Erin and Grace Reasoner, Michael, Alabaster and Bridget Haynes, Katey, Abby, James, Lexie, and Isaac Reasoner; and his sister Ellen (Dennis) Thayer.
James was preceded in death by his parents Martha and Milton Reasoner and his granddaughter Meghan O’Neill.
James was born on November 30, 1940 in Jackson, Michigan and attended Vandercook Lake Schools. He earned his Bachelors, Masters, and Specialist degrees from Michigan State University and married his sweetheart, Aileen, in 1963.
James dedicated 36 years to Michigan Center Schools educating and inspiring young people as a high school teacher, counselor, and administrator. He was a leader in introducing computer technology to the school system and later became technology director, teaching related classes. During summers in his early career, he directed camps for both physically and cognitively challenged children and Boy Scout Camp. He was an Eagle Scout and assisted his two sons to attain the same rank. James was an active member of the Vandercook Lake Lions Club, served on the Jackson Right to Life Board and was a dedicated volunteer at the hospital gift shop. He was a devoted parishioner of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, a Knight of Columbus, and served on numerous councils and committees within the parish.
In his younger years James spent time snorkeling, scuba diving and fishing. He always enjoyed family summer vacations at Lake Michigan (especially walking with his walking stick along the beach), camping trips (leading songs around the campfire), wintering in Florida, playing cards and making trips to the casino.
Above all, James was a loving husband and a devoted father and grandfather. His family was his top priority and the heart of his world. His kindness, humility, and unwavering dedication to those he loved will be his legacy.
The family wishes to thank all those who were kind, caring, and supportive during his lengthy illness, especially Stephanie, a compassionate and devoted caretaker.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, August 20, 2026 at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church at 10:00 AM with Fr. Timothy Nelson officiating. Cremation will follow the Funeral Mass.
The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday, August 20, 2026 from 9:00 to 10:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to St. Mary Star of the Sea Church or Batten Disease Support & Research Association (bdsrafoundation.org).
