Maurer, James P.
of Jackson, passed away at home under the loving care of his family on Tuesday, September 8, 2020. He was born on November 2, 1934 on All Souls Day in Nashville, Michigan. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joyce M. Maurer; sons, James the II (Kelly) of Pemberville, Ohio and Michael (Cathlene) of Parma, Michigan; twelve grandchildren, Sarah (Kristopher), Paul, George, Jimmy, Billy, Nick, Kyle (Ashley), Caytie, Emily (Drew), Peter (Katrina), Margaret (Thane), and Matthew; and eleven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Herman; mother, Katherine; daughter, Katherine Mietelka; two infant children, John and Ann; and two brothers, Herman and Peter.
James was raised in Hastings, Michigan and attended St. Rose School and Hastings High. He went to work for Western Union Telegraph Company as a bicycle messenger and progressed to District Manager of Michigan and Ohio and worked there for 41½ years. He was in charge of Western Union Money Transfer Systems and worked in the capacity for many years. He was a US Army Veteran. James met Joyce Hopkins and they married in Grand Blanc, Michigan on May 4, 1963. He loved to sing and was in the St. Mary Choir for 30 years and a cantor and also sang in the Jackson Barbershop Chorus. Jim joined the Knights of Columbus in 1956 and was the District Deputy for the K of C in Jackson, past grand knight of Ypsilanti Council 3230, Jackson Council #609, and St. Mary Council #9301. He chaired the Tootsie Roll Drive for the mentally handicapped at St. Mary's Church for many years and he put out the council bulletin for many years. He was the Red Cross Blood Drive Chairman for 20 years. Jim loved St. Mary's and never missed Sunday Mass. Thanks to the care workers and supportive family.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, September 14, 2020 at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church at 12:00 Noon with Fr. Tim Nelson officiating. Interment will be held at St. John's Catholic Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church on Monday from 11:00 am until 12:00 Noon.
Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Knights of Columbus St. Mary's Council #9301.
