Sawicki, Elizabeth "Liz" "Betty"
Was born in Jackson, MI to Ben and Cecelia (Chmielewski) Sawicki on February 3, 1948. She passed away suddenly at home on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at age 70. She was a loving mother to Stefan Sawicki and a beloved sister to Richard Sawicki, the late Bernie Sawicki and Cecelia (James) Fydroski.
Liz attended Michigan State University and received a Bachelor & Master's degree in Education. She taught special education in the Jackson Public Schools before she began her adventures. She taught on a naval base in Sasebo Japan and also taught at the American School in Warsaw Poland. She returned to Jackson and taught kindergarten at Cascades school before she retired in 2010. She developed many friendships during her time teaching overseas and continued these friendships.
Liz loved to travel. She and her sister and later her son traveled to many countries. She was an avid reader of books and current events. She also enjoyed spending time at her cabin on the Au Sable River and loved Lake Michigan. She was the glue for family holidays. We will truly miss her delicious and beautifully decorated Christmas and Easter events. She was a devoted Michigan State basketball and football fan – she rarely missed watching a game.
Liz also loved to shop and had many beautiful items. She was a collector of china (she said she was a plate rescuer), silver, jewelry and vintage pieces. She and her sister enjoyed their time together at resale stores and garage sales.
Liz loved her son and would do anything for him. She also loved her family, friends and politics. She had passion and was kind, loving, generous and full of fun. She did for others, never asking for anything in return. She volunteered at the food pantry at St. John's United Church of Christ in Jackson. She was always buying items to donate to the food pantry.
A celebration of her life will be held at the Desnoyer Funeral Home on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 12:00 Noon.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:00 AM until 12:00 Noon.
Instead of sending flowers, donations can be made to the food pantry at St. John's United Church of Christ in Jackson.
