Shumard, Douglas James
Of Jackson, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 8, 2023 at the age of 80 years, in the arms of his wife, Barbara.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara Hall Shumard; sons, James (Cindy) Shumard and Stephen (Jenny) Shumard; grandsons, Evan and Logan Shumard; siblings, Cathy (Michael) Moorehead, Thomas (Leslie) Shumard, JoAnne Shumard, and Todd Shumard; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, James W. Shumard; mother, Helen Clark Shumard; daughter, Kimberly; and brothers, Loren and Dennis Shumard.
Doug was born in Jackson on June 17, 1942. He was a 1961 graduate of St. John the Evangelist High School. Of their 59 years of marriage, Doug and Barb lived in Tulsa Oklahoma, where he served as a flight instructor and charter pilot, and in Enid Oklahoma at Vance Airforce Base where he served as a civilian flight instructor. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1971 and began a nearly 30 year career with Ford Motor in Illinois and Michigan. After 48 years they returned to Michigan and resided in Plymouth, Chelsea, and Grass Lake and finally returned to Jackson in 2014.
Doug was president of the Experimental Aircraft Association, Chapter 113 in Plymouth Michigan and later as treasurer of EAA Chapter 304 in Jackson.
Most importantly, Doug was the founder and President of Good Shepherd Catholic Radio in Jackson, Michigan. He took great joy in bringing Catholic Radio to Jackson and grateful for his long standing relationship with Ave Maria Radio as well as the EWTN network.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 14, 2023 at 10:30 AM at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church with Father Tim Nelson as the Celebrant. Interment will follow at St. John Catholic Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the Desnoyer Funeral Home on Thursday, April 13 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM with a Rosary Service at 7:30 PM.
