Of Jackson, MI was born November 29, 1934 and passed away Thursday, March 24, 2016 at Allegiance Hospice Home at age 81. He was preceded in death by his parents Lawrence and Frances Cavender and his Aunt and Uncle Kathryn and James Sykes who helped raise Dave and Shirley after the early passing of their mother. Dave was with his devoted wife of 36 years and surrounded by his loving family. Dave is survived by his wife Janice R. Cavender: his four children Kellie (Matt) Russell, Tricia Vinson, Michael (Lisa) Cavender, and Betsy Cavender, his two stepsons James (Julie) and Patrick (Shelly) Martin. His 16 Grandchildren: Marci (Joe) Weed, Jaime (Justin) Warren, Lindsey (Daryl) Bracht, Matt (Lauren) Russell; Brandon (Katelyn), Kelsi, Brent, and Kaitlyn Vinson; David, Justin, Sarah, and Michael Cavender: Joshua, Thomas, Elizabeth, and Olivia Martin; his sister Shirley (Ted) Addison, nephew Dane, and niece Shellie (Sean) Cook, all of CA, sister-in-law Nancy Buck, and 11 Great Grandchildren.
Dave graduated from St. John's High School in 1953. Dave proudly served in the Army in Holland and France. He worked as a letter carrier at the USPS in Jackson for 34 years before retiring. In retirement he worked at CISCO for an additional 15 years. Dave loved to play golf, boating, and referee football. He was a great sports fan and loved all things MSU. Most of all, he loved being with and attending the sports events of his grand children. He was an active member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, the American Legion Post #315 in Brooklyn, and The Polish Falcons Club where he cooked for the annual fish fry the last twenty years.
Mr. Cavender is at the Desnoyer Funeral Home where a prayer service will be held on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at 9:30 AM followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at St. John's Catholic Cemetery. Father Robert Pienta will officiate at the Funeral Mass.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, March 28 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM with a Vigil Service at 6:00 PM.
Instead of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to the Allegiance Hospice Home or Allegiance Hospice, who provided such wonderful care.
