Daniel Irving Hurst

Daniel Irving Hurst born in Jackson, Michigan on December 5, 1963, passed away in the early morning hours of July 5, 2026, as a result of a serious heart condition, at the age of 62.

Dan grew up on the north side of Jackson, residing at the Hurst Family homestead on Lansing Avenue, with his Mom and Dad and 7 brothers and sisters. Dan was fond of reminding his friends and associates that growing up in a large, German-Irish Catholic family like his was non-stop fun and action!

Dan started his business career just like all of his siblings, mowing lawns and shoveling sidewalks, starting with Jim's Tavern, located next door, established by Dan's grandfather after WWII, now known as the "Greystone Tavern". Dan also followed in all of his older brothers footsteps, becoming a paper boy for the Jackson Citizen Patriot.

Dan, fondly known by family and friends as "Dan the Man", graduated from Jackson High School in 1982 and then enjoyed a long career as sales and service manager at Rowell's Sweeper Shop on E. Michigan Ave., in Jackson, until his mentor, the shop owner, Gordon Will, passed away and the business was sold, at which time Dan retired.

Dan resided most of his adult life in Napoleon, Michigan, with his significant other, Peggy Creger, with whom Dan had a son, Lukas Hurst, of whom he is very proud. Dan also raised Peggy's other 2 sons as his own, Ty and Lance, whom he cared for dearly. All 3 boys grew up to become hard-working and productive young men, as a result of Dan's guidance. Dan even named his email address after his 2 grandsons, those boys being Logan and Decklan.

After Peggy passed away, Dan grew very close with Kim McCafferty and her children, Jeremy (Ashley), Treven and Miranda, as well as grandsons, Zaydian and Zander, and Kim's brother, Michael (Samantha) Doan. Dan and Kim were very close, enjoying steak dinners at their favorite steakhouse, Lions football, and Sunday drives to their favorite donut shop. Dan was also an avid fisherman.

After his retirement from Rowell's, Dan would offer his technical know-how to his friends and neighbors at the mobile home park where he lived, often at no cost to help those in need. Dan was affectionately referred to by all the children in the park where he lived as " Papa Danny".

Dan is survived by his son, Lukas (Mindy) Hurst of Grass Lake; step sons, Lance Creger of Eaton Rapids and Ty Creger of Brooklyn; his brothers and sisters, Dennis (Kathy ) Hurst of Traverse Lake, Sandy Greiner of Jackson, Cindy (Rich) Grzybowski of Sonoma Lake, Charles (Cassy) Hurst of Mirror Lake, and Eric (Sheri) Hurst of Albion; and many nieces and nephews, and his beloved housecat, Meow Meow.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, William and Barbara Hurst; his older brother, Bill Hurst; his twin brother, Ron Hurst; as well as his life-long best friend, Robby Loomis, who passed away just two weeks before Dan passed away.

Dan was loved and respected by his extended family and his many friends. He was always ready and willing to help anyone who needed his technical expertise, which knowledge was significant. Dan will be missed by all who knew him!

According to Dan's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no formal services. The family will gather at a later date to celebrate his life.
