Mars, Cathleen

Died peacefully on January 3, 2021, after a long battle with Alzheimer's /Dementia. Instead of dwelling on the painful disease that took her away, her family wishes to remember the impact she had on so many.

She was born and raised in Detroit, and later settled in Jackson where she had three beloved children.

Cathleen loved Michigan and would never have wanted to live anywhere else. She marveled at each new season. She loved the spring when the trillium would first bloom, followed by the lilacs and the dogwood. She loved the long summer days filled with light. She loved the vibrant colors of autumn and would often call her children who had since moved away to warmer climates, to tell them what they were missing. And she loved the crystalline winter days, whether she was out in the snow or curled up in front of her beloved fireplace. Cathleen is best remembered with this quote by Henry David Thoreau: "Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the earth."

She taught her children to be kind, to always work hard, to read a lot, to help those in need, and to have gratitude in life.

She was an active member of Queen of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church, a Master Gardener, and a member of the Jackson County Daffodil Society. After retiring from her career as a registered nurse, Cathleen devoted her time to various charities in town. Her interests included reading (she loved the poetry of Robert Frost), music, gardening, and spending time outdoors.

Her children and family have decided to hold a memorial service in the summer when they can safely and fully celebrate her life. A lilac tree will be planted in her honor.

Cathleen is survived by her sister, Penelope Damore; brother James Craft; and her loving children; Kurt Mars; Noelani Mars; and John-Paul Mars.

At the end of the longest night, there will be light. Her family is so grateful that she is finally at peace.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Alzheimer's Organization in her name. #ENDALZ on #TheLongestDay. One day there will be a cure.

The entire family gives a huge loving thanks beyond all measure to the entire staff of Highland Assisted Living and Memory Care and Southern Care Hospice, for their care and service.
