Phillips (Schmidt), Catherine Ann
of Jackson died peacefully at home on the morning of Sunday, May 3, 2015 at the age of 99. She was born on April 6, 1916 in Wyandotte, Michigan to Henry and Anna Schmidt. She married her husband of 63 years, Dr. George H. Phillips, in October of 1940. He preceded her in death in January 2004. Also preceded in death by her four brothers as well as her son, Richard, who passed away in April of this year.
Catherine is survived her daughter, Georginne of Jackson; five sons and their spouses, Stephen (Marilyn) of Canfield, OH, David (Pamela) of Caledonia, MI, Thomas (Cynthia) of Traverse City, MI, Kenneth (Alec) of Denver, CO, and Robert (JoAnn) of Landenburg, PA; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Catherine Schmidt of Southgate, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Catherine grew up in Wyandotte, Michigan, attending Joseph's Academy in Adrian, Michigan, which she remembered with fondness all through her life for launching her love of learning. She attended nursing school in Detroit and worked as a registered nurse at Wyandotte General Hospital, where she met her to-be husband, Dr. George. She spent most of her life in Jackson, but was deeply fond of world travel, which sharpened her appetite for history. Catherine was an avid reader for all the years her eyesight would allow, regularly ingesting thick volumes of history and historical fiction and multiple Sunday newspapers.
Catherine is remembered with affection and admiration by her family, extended family and friends for her love of knowledge, interest in world matters, and feisty temperament. Throughout her 99 years she endured much, survived forcefully, and stayed connected to the faith of her youth.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 8 at Queen of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church at 11:00 AM with Fr. John Whitlock officiating. Interment at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Wyandotte, Michigan on Saturday.
The family will receive friends at the Desnoyer Funeral Home on Thursday from 4-8 PM and at Queen's on Friday from 10:00-11:00 AM. A Scripture Service will be held at 7:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Allegiance Hospice, whose care is gratefully acknowledged, or to Lumen Christi High School would be greatly appreciated.
