Our beloved Carolyn Phelps (Wowianko) passed away peacefully on September 24, 2009, after a brief bout with cancer. Carolyn was born on January 21, 1940. She was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Sophia (Czulowski) Wowianko and her grandparents, Peter and Mary Wowianko, and Paul and Augustina Czulowski. Carolyn is survived by her beloved husband of 43 years, Bob Phelps, her loving sister Janet Greer (Wowianko), special cousins Mary Spencer and Kathleen Platt, several aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and their families. Carolyn was born in Jackson. She graduated from Jackson High School in 1957. She received her Bachelors Degree in Education in 1960 and her Masters Degree in 1961 from Michigan State University. She taught at Trumble School in Jackson for four years then moved to Livionia where she taught elementary school for 26 years. She retired in 1990 and moved to Naples, FL. She became President of Michigan Retired Teachers Association-Naples chapter. She and her husband lived in Naples, FL in the winters and Devils Lake, MI in the summers. She was a member of St. Mary's on the Lake Catholic Church. Carolyn was a very giving person and generously supported several different charities.
Carolyn will be remembered for her love for people and kindness to others. She enjoyed life to the fullest and was always busy doing something. She had several close friends with whom she shared many wonderful times. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
According to her wishes Carolyn has been cremated. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's on the Lake Catholic Church, Manitou Beach, on Monday, Sept. 28th at 11:00 am. Rev. Paul Grehl O.S.F.S. officiating.
