Cameron James Mitchell
Formerly of Jackson, Michigan, now of Grand Rapids, passed away in peace on Saturday, October 23, 2010, at the age of 54. He offered his life to further research and treatment for brain tumor patients by participating in a clinical trial through Duke University while at the same time receiving superior care from doctors in Grand Rapids. His optimism was unyielding despite all that he endured. Cameron James Mitchell is survived by his wife, Margaret (Peggy) his mother, Lorraine (Vogt) Ford-Smith and her husband Fred, his step-mother Jeanne Mitchell of Jackson, his brother, Douglas L. Mitchell and his son and daughter, Matthew and Megan and a special friend Tracy Cox. His brother Andrew A. Mitchell and wife Sheila (Gallant) and their children Anne Lorraine and Drew. His brother Mark D Mitchell and wife Jamie and their son Mason. He is survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was a very special brother-in-law, uncle, and nephew to Peggy's family and cherished them with great love and affection. Cam was a 1974 graduate of Lumen Christi High School. He was generous and respectful of all who knew him. Always adventuresome, helpful to those in need, willing to learn something new, a good friend to all who knew him and shared all that was his. Cam was a great conversationalist and always sincerely interested in others. He was a good son, a loving husband, a helpful brother, a fun seeking nephew, and an affectionate uncle. Cam was interested in his ancestry and was working on his family tree. He connected with cousins across the United States and Germany. He discovered that the Mitchell's arrived in Massachusetts, Plymouth Colony, traveling northward along the coast to Maine. His ancestors were seafaring and served in the Revolutionary War and in the Civil War with the Maine regiment at Gettysburg. During the 1880's, his family followed Western expansion and homesteaded in Marshall, South Dakota. His Grandfather, James A Mitchell was born in Marshall and landed in Jackson County through New York during the 1930's .The Vogt family came to this country at the turn of the century and were skilled blacksmiths and prospered in Jackson. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr John Stevenson, Dr Lawrence Pawl, Dr. Stephen Bloom, Dr. Chris VandenBurg, Dr Robert Lang, Dr Min Zhu, all of their staff, and the compassionate staff of Life EMS Ambulance, Health Care Associates and Community Care Givers.
Visitation will be held at Desnoyer Funeral Home, Jackson, Michigan on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. Visitation in Grand Rapids, Michigan will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 28th at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, with the funeral mass immediately following at 1:00 p.m. Private interment will be held at St. Johns Catholic Cemetery. The Monsignor Ernest Schnieder officiating.
