He was born on February 5, 1927 and passed away on August 10, 2012. He was preceded in death by his parents Guy and Rowena Charter, sister Janice Hoffmaster Fox, and son Robert Lynn Charter. Brien was an accomplished athlete lettering in football, basketball and golf. For several years he was Jackson's leading amateur golfer. He also was an all-state football player and basketball star at Jackson High School. After graduation and service in the Coast Guard, he was quarterback for the Jackson All-Stars, leading them to two undefeated seasons and to the Michigan Championships. He received a degree in Business Administration from JCC. Brien became a member of the PGA and worked as an assistant pro at the Augusta National, the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, and Fisher Island, NY. He was the head pro at the Country Club of Jonesville in Wisconsin, Green Valley Country Club in S.C., Shanty Creek in Bellaire, MI and Arbor Hills in Jackson. He was Director of Golf at the Country Club of Miami, Fl. He assisted Clifford Roberts with the Master's tournament for 15 years. He had a long and distinguished career as a member of the PGA. Brien competed and won several golf tournaments including the Michigan Open and the Michigan PGA. He qualified to play in the National PGA Open five times. Brien was among the first inductees into the Jackson Golf Hall of Fame.

He is survived by his wife Beverly Harr Charter, sons Brien and Mark Charter and daughter Catherine Bauder, grandchildren Mark Robert Charter and Katherine Rose Charter and his sister, Lorraine VanSchoick.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, September 8 at 10:30 AM at Queen of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church in Jackson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lumen Christi High School, Queen's School or the charity of your choice.
