Bernard J. Wernet, 60, passed away peacefully in his home on September 29, 2013 after a long battle with cancer. Bernie was born August 15, 1953 in Jackson, Michigan to Bernard C. and Betty I. Wernet (Boyce). Bernie is survived by his fiancé of 12 years, Candy Petty; his three children Dawn (Bryan) Cannon, Eric (Tammy) Wernet, and Ryan Wernet; his four step-children David (Andrea) Petty, Jimmy (Melanie) Petty, Joshua (Amanda) Petty, and Justin Petty; his thirteen grandchildren Cristian, Alex, Rebecca, Noah, Owen, Elliot, Daniel, Marissa, Cassandra, Riddik, Zach, Brianna, and Xavier; his mother Betty Wernet; his siblings Kathy (Tom) Gustafson, Barb (Tom) Will, Marilyn Rhodes, Rick (Shelley) Wernet, Dorothy (Leo) Lammers, Patti (Marty) Susort, Mary Castle, and Karen (Todd) Powers; his father-in-law Donald Lehmkuhle, and many, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Bernard C. Wernet, his brother-in-law Chris Castle, his granddaughter Kara Aubrianna Bero and great nephew Logan DuBois.
For the past 12 years, Bernie worked at Kroger and recently retired in July 2013. He was the honorary team captain of Kroger's Relay for Life team (Bernie's Bunch) and ceremony ribbon cutter in August 2013. Bernie was a fun loving, kind-hearted man who loved to spend time with his family, to work outside, and to make others laugh. All of his grandchildren loved to visit Grandpa Bernie. Bernie was deeply loved by all who knew him and his passing will forever leave a hole in many of our hearts.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the Desnoyer Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Woodland Cemetery. Pastor Bea Robinson will officiate at the funeral service.
Contributions to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.
The family will receive friends at the Desnoyer Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM and on Thursday from 10 AM to the time of service.
A Rosary Service will be held on Wednesday at 3 PM at the Funeral Home.
