Bernard Albert Berry, Jr. died on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at age 75.
More commonly known as Bernie, he was born August 1, 1946, in Marshall, Michigan to Bernard A. and Helen Tobias Berry. Bernie graduated from Albion High School in 1965 and took a variety of classes over the next few years at Jackson Community College.
As a young boy and through his young adult years he loved to ice skate. He also loved anything mechanical and could comprehend how to fix many things that were broken and make them work again. He enjoyed gardening and was a person who had a "green thumb" for growing sweet corn, tomatoes, green beans, and all kinds of melon. Reading non-fiction was enjoyable and not at all boring to him, and he thoroughly appreciated nature. He especially loved birds and dogs. Bernie also enjoyed going to dances in his younger years. He loved music and enjoyed everything from Country & Western to 50's and 60's Rock 'n Roll, as well as Jazz. It also made him happy to hear the Tabernacle Choir sing hymns and Christmas songs.
In his Jr High School years, Bernie delivered the Albion newspaper on a walking route in Albion. He worked for his father at Five Points Sinclair in his high school years and following that worked for Union Steel Products for 18 years. He had his own lawn mowing service for 25-30 years and also worked for Cracker Barrel in Jackson for about 22 years at the same time as he had his lawn mowing service.
He would say the greatest decision he made on earth was to be baptized and become a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. That he did in November 1973, becoming an active member of the Jackson Ward. Some of the service he rendered in the Church included being a Ward Clerk, a Home Teacher, Young Men's Secretary, a member of the Sunday School Presidency, and in his later years a Single Adult Representative. He also enjoyed going with the missionaries when they had appointments to teach lessons to investigators.
He met and married Ruth Butters in 1979. They later divorced. He then met and married Sherry Leonard in 1985. They too later divorced. He was sealed to his parents in the Chicago, Illinois Temple in 1997.
Surviving Bernie are his children: Jason Berry (Rebecca) of Ypsilanti; Amanda Berry Schmidt (John) of Charles Town, West Virginia; and Misty Berry Ewanciw (Mike) of Beulah, Michigan. Bernie has three grandchildren: Erich, Salinger and Wyatt; and a sister, Susan Berry, of Murray, Utah. Also surviving Bernie are several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and all his aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 8, at 12:00 Noon at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 3019 West Morrell Street, Jackson, Michigan 49203. Friends may come that morning at 11:00 a.m. for a short viewing period. Graveside services with a dedication of the grave will immediately follow the funeral service at Mount Evergreen Cemetery, 1047 Greenwood Avenue, Jackson, Michigan.
