Spaan, Arnold W. "Arnie"

Age 96, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 17, 2016. Survived by his wife Mary Ann of 67 years; five children, Cynthia Risinger, Mike Spaan, Pat Spaan, Johanna (Ken) Duffek, and Mark (Karen) Spaan; seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Arnie was born in Rochester, New York on May 25, 1920. He enlisted in the Coast Guard during WWII. After the war he returned to Michigan State University where he earned his B.A Degree and later his Masters Degree from Indiana University. He was the recreation director in West Virgina and Albion, Michigan where he spent many enjoyable years. Arnie became a teacher in 1967 with Jackson Public Schools, retiring from the district in 1983. Bowling and being a member of the Jackson Dance Club were activities that brought joy to Arnie's life. He was a Spartan through and through, as well as an avid fan of all Detroit sports. Arnie lead a life of kindness, generosity, and respect towards others and always tried to see the humor in everyday life. He will be cherished and missed by all who knew him.

The Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Queen of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church on Friday, December 23 at 10:30 AM with Fr. Timothy MacDonald officiating. Cremation will follow the Funeral Mass.

The family will receive friends at the Desnoyer Funeral Home on Thursday, December 22 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM with a Vigil Service at 7:00 PM.

Instead of sending flowers, contributions in Arnie's Memory can be made to the Cascades Humane Society, 1515 Carmen Drive, Jackson, Michigan 49202.
