Doroshko (Staruchina), Anna

Passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2022. She was preceded in death by her husband, Semen.

Anna was born in Petrivske, Ukraine on August 6, 1927. As a child, she loved being outside, swimming in the Donets River and playing amid fields of flowers. She lived through Stalin's attempt to destroy Ukraine by starving its people in the 1930s. It is called, "Holodomor." Her village was then nearly destroyed when the Germans and Russians fought each other from opposite sides of Petrivske. After losing most of her family, Anna was taken by the German army to work in a stamping plant as forced labor. When the war ended, she went to a displaced persons' camp for Ukrainians in the American sector of Germany. There she met and married Semen Doroshko and they started their family. Their eldest daughter, Luba, was born in Germany and eventually the little family emigrated to the U.S., sponsored by a church in Indiana.

Anna was a homemaker and cook on the farm where Semen worked. The three of them soon moved to Jackson, Michigan, where friends of their had settled. Over the years, Anna's family grew to include Lucy and the twins, Irene and Anna Helen. Anna and her husband ran Doro Window Cleaning Company for over 40 years. During that time, she managed a household and taught her children to read, write and understand the Ukrainian language. She had a happy life filled with love of family and friends.

Anna will be missed by her daughters: Luba Davis (Tom), Lucy Doroshko (Tom Wheeker), Anna Helen Sager (David) and Irene McGlinchey (John) and other friends and family. She was known as "Baba" to her grandchildren: Scott Davis, Andy Davis, Michael Wheeker, Amanda Wheeker, Mason Sager, Michael Sager and Natalie Griffin as well as a number of great grandchildren.
