Alice Louise Haas was born in Braddock, Pennsylvania, on February 26, 1921, the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Richards Haas. Her father nicknamed her 'Dolly', which replaced Alice for the duration of her life.

Dolly grew up in Monroe, Michigan. She enjoyed the leisure activities a small rural community provides. Upon graduation from high school she enrolled at The University of Michigan. It was during her time there that she met Robert Medlar, med student, who became her husband. The couple relocated to Jackson, Michigan in 1951.

Dolly and Bob raised three children, all of whom went to the University of Michigan. There was never really any choice. During those child-rearing days Dolly went back to the U of M and got her teaching certificate, along with her sister, Charlotte. Dolly taught for many years at Memorial Elementary School, teaching kindergarten and second grade. She loved working with the children and her colleagues, many of whom are still close friends.

Bob and Dolly had a second life at Base Lake near Dexter. Here they spent time in the summer and long weekends during the school year. It was Dolly's home away from home filled with extended family and neighbors.

Dolly was a people person always looking for ways to connect with others. She was a member of P.E.O., Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and the Jackson Medical Auxiliary. She had a knack of making them feel comfortable and at home. She was also an avid bridge player.

Dolly died suddenly at her home in Vista Grand Villa on February 2nd just weeks away from her 97th birthday. She was preceded by her husband Robert and her daughter Martha Valerio. She is survived by her sister Charlotte Sallade, her son Robert Charles (Christina) Medlar, her daughter Mary Alice (Donald) Wahr, grandchildren Jay (Allison) Valerio and Anthony (Amy) Valerio, Rob Medlar and Elizabeth (Gary) Watkins, Theo and William Wahr and great grandchildren, Joseph and Jacob Valerio, Hayden Medlar, Lillian and Charlie Watkins.
