Cuiss, Victor S. “Vic” Of Jackson, beloved son of Samuel and Lulu (Bahnmiller) Cuiss, devoted husband of 66 years to Jacquelyn Cuiss, loving father to Cathleen (Rob) Hendrick of Clark Lake and Cynthia Neely of Jackson, loving brother of Grace Gaebelein of Jackson as well as grand father and great grand father to many grand children and great grand children.
Having graduated from Jackson High School and Jackson Junior College, his education was interrupted by World War Two where upon he served his country in the Army Air Corps. He resumed his education after the war resulting in a BA in economics from Albion College. He was the owner and president of Jackson Plumbing & Heating Supply Co., Inc. where he had been employed since 1945.
A philosophy of giving back to his community resulted in his having served on the following boards and commissions: The Civil Service Board; Board of Directors, Jackson Chamber of Commerce; President, Country Club of Jackson; Board of Directors Midwest Bank, Premier Bank and Republic Bank: President, Kiwanis Club of Jackson; Board of Trustees, Jackson Community College; Jackson County Parks and Recreation Commission; Sharp Park Board of Trustees; Downtown Development Authority.
His love of athletics led to his certification by the Michigan High School Athletic Association to officiate high school football and basketball, which he enjoyed from 1950 to 1975. He received the honor of officiating the Michigan High School men’s state Class C championship basketball game in 1961 and the men’s state Class A basketball championship game in 1962. He also served as Director of Officials of the Western Athletic Association from 1974 to 1980. His lifelong passion for the game of golf, both as a competitor and advocate has yielded a number of accomplishments. His skill on the course resulted in his having won thirty nine local golf titles. In 1968, he joined the Golf Association of Michigan (G.A.M.), serving a term as its President and also serving on its Board of Governors for many years. During his affiliation with the G.A.M., he also served as Chairman of the Atlas Trophy Matches, Chairman of the Championship Committee, and Chairman of the Michigan Amateur Golf Championship wherein his efforts brought this prestigious tournament to Jackson in 1989. He as also a member of the United States Golf Association (U.S.G.A.) having served on its Sectional Affairs Committee from 1984-1995. Locally, he served as Chairman of the Jackson Golf Committee which directs a number of the major golf championships in Jackson and also works to advance local golf in general. In 1982 he served as the Chairman of the Jackson Golf Hall of Fame Committee, which was responsible for making the Jackson Golf Hall of Fame a reality. In recognition of his efforts and accomplishments in the sport of golf, he was awarded the Al Cotton Award (1985), inducted into the Albion College Athletic Hall of Fame and has had the Champion’s trophy for the Jackson Masters Golf Championship formally named “The Vic Cuiss Cup.” Through a man of accomplishment, he will always be thought of as Vic, extending his warm handshake and infectious smile. He will be missed.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Dr. Lawrence Walters officiating. Private interment at Woodland Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the Desnoyer Funeral Home on Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Jackson County Animal Shelter or the Ella Sharp Park would be appreciated.
